Professional Profile

Darryl G. Barr is the founder and director of Bulletproof Forensic Consulting Ltd. and a forensic scientist with more than 30 years of experience in firearm and toolmark examination, shooting incident reconstruction, forensic laboratory operations and expert testimony. His career includes forensic examination within the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) National Forensic Services laboratory system and leadership of the Calgary Police Service Forensic Firearms and Toolmark Laboratory. Since establishing his consulting practice in 2015, he has provided specialized case review, analysis, expert opinion, professional training and laboratory-development advice.

Gunshot Residue Evidence Examination and Identification — certified 2014; recertified 2019 and 2023.

Maintaining AFTE certification requires successful annual proficiency testing, documented continuing professional development and formal recertification every five years.

Mr. Barr also participates in independently administered annual proficiency testing through Collaborative Testing Services (CTS) in firearms examination, toolmarks examination and distance determination.

He was certified as a Forensic Firearms and Toolmark Examiner by the RCMP in 1995 and holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Manitoba (1992).

Expert Witness Experience

Qualified as an expert witness in firearms and toolmark identification in courts and proceedings across Canada, including British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador. His experience includes provincial and superior courts, military courts martial and public inquiries. Expert services encompass scientific evaluation, independent case review, written opinions and testimony.

Forensic Laboratory Leadership & Development

As Manager of the Calgary Police Service Forensic Firearms and Toolmark Laboratory (2011–2024), Mr. Barr held a leading role in planning, developing and implementing a full-service municipal forensic firearms laboratory. The laboratory was among the pioneering municipal participants in the Canadian Integrated Ballistics Identification Network (CIBIN), integrating Integrated Ballistics Identification System (IBIS) technology with forensic examination and investigative workflows.

His contributions spanned laboratory facility planning, specialized equipment procurement, workforce development, recruitment, training, examination workflows, and the integration of forensic results with investigative intelligence. He also developed policies and processes designed to maximize the recovery and investigative value of crime guns and shooting-related evidence.

Drawing on this experience, he has provided technical and operational consulting and professional advice to other organizations on laboratory feasibility, service development, capacity planning, staffing, infrastructure, quality processes and operational improvements.

Training & Knowledge Transfer

An experienced instructor and speaker, Mr. Barr develops and delivers specialized training in shooting incident reconstruction, forensic firearm examination, airgun ballistics, firearm suppressor examination, and cognitive bias and ethics. He has instructed or presented to police, forensic scientists, legal professionals and international audiences, including events associated with AFTE, INTERPOL, and the Washington State Patrol. His teaching draws on operational laboratory experience, research and casework.
